The Herman Miller Aeron office chair is available in 3 models; the basic model does not feature adjustable arms or an adjustable tilt. The second option has an adjustable tilt but not adjustable arms and finally the top model features fully adjustable parts. All models are available in two colors: carbon pellicle and graphite base. Its distinctive design is familiar to aficionados of Herman Miller chairs. The chair’s form is designed to naturally conform to an individual’s body, despite their height or weight size. Many retailers and manufacturers have sought to mimic the design of these chairs; however, the original design simply cannot be surpassed. Another highly appealing aspect of these chairs is the fact that they are constructed from recycled materials. The manufacturer is so confident in the product that they have produced that they offer a twelve year warranty on all of their chairs.

Professional and consumer written reviews have been overwhelmingly positive about the Herman Miller Aeron office chair. There were many individuals who originally purchased the chair for its visual appeal, intending it to be used as a secondary office chair. Upon discovering that the Herman Miller chairs were more comfortable than the primary office chair, they switched immediately. Other consumers have even gone as far as to replace their dining room table chairs with ones created by Herman Miller (they don’t only make office chairs!). Individuals who are smaller in stature find this type of chair especially comfortable to use.

The Evolution Of The Herman Miller Desk Chair

For some, one of the most important things about any Herman Miller furniture is that it is made in the USA. The company was originally located in Zeeland, Michigan and started as the Michigan Star Furniture Company. The name Zeeland comes from the Dutch language and the population in the early 1920s was strongly Dutch. These people were skilled craftsmen, and the perfect people to employ for the manufacture of fine quality furniture. The company has recently gone through a rebirth, thanks to strong interest in “retro” furniture and such things as the Herman Miller desk chair are once again rolling off the production lines.

If any one has seen the designs and types of furniture generally produced in the 1920s, it was to say the least, boring. There were many furniture manufacturing companies around the Grand Rapids area at the time, and Herman Miller looked around and said “boring” too. He wanted to be innovative and bring new life to the furniture industry.

By 1931 Miller was still involved with the production of traditional American furniture, which was simply an adaptation of European furniture, many lines of which were sold through Sears Roebuck.

Then one day in walked Gilbert Rohde with many innovative ideas and Herman Miller worked with Rohde designing a completely new line of furniture – the likes of which had not been seen before in the US, it was smaller, functional and much more attractive. After the 1933 World’s Fair, the public was taken with these new ideas.

By 1940 the company was growing rapidly, also after including a line of very functional office furniture which included the Herman Miller desk chair.

The Herman Miller Aeron chair is one of the best-known ergonomic office chairs. The Aeron line has been around since the early ’90s, with refined versions being released every few years or so. We sat down with the latest Aeron chair, and here are our impressions.

Comfort and Adjustability

When the Herman Miller Aeron chair first appeared on the market, it boasted a number of features that set new standards for ergonomic office chair design. To this day, Aeron remains ahead of the crowd in many respects, and its advanced design creates nearly unmatched comfort.

The Aeron is a mesh chair. While most office chairs use foam padding, the Aeron’s Pellicle mesh system provides a few unique benefits. Perhaps most importantly, it not only conforms to the body very quickly, but it also reverts to its original shape when you get up, without imprinting or indentation, even after long-term use. This results in superior, more consistent comfort and aesthetics. The mesh is also much more breathable than most foam pads, leading to better temperature regulation.

The overall ergonomic design of the Herman Miller Aeron chair is excellent; its features include the Kinemat tilt system, which maintains full support of your body as you recline or adjust your posture in just about any possible way. The design of the armrests is also notable, with a very slight dip in the back that results in what we considered a much more comfortable arm alignment than what’s provided by just about any other chair.

Herman Miller also offers a few optional upgrades for the Aeron, the most highly recommended of which is the PostureFit custom lumbar support.

In terms of adjustability, the Aeron is in line with other high-end ergonomic office chairs in that all of the key areas are individually adjustable, with a range of possible settings for each. The one drawback of the Aeron in this area is that the controls can be difficult to reach while you’re sitting, which makes it less convenient. Finally, the Aeron is available in three basic sizes, which effectively provide another degree of customization to the user.
